To be or not to be

In the famous Shakespeare play Hamlet there’s a famous line to be or not to be that is the question.

I was watching Jim Rohn yesterday and for me he is a very powerful speaker because she talks and very simple concepts that carry many truths. One thing you said yesterday that was very powerful to me was what are you becoming. He said when you take a job or working don’t ask what you are getting ask what you are becoming. Wow that is a very powerful concept.

At first you may wonder but I need things so getting is very important. No doubt you need things just survive and to live with you enjoy your life to some degree, but you also need to invest in yourself it is sort of like people that are focused on their income versus their balance sheet. Jim Rohn doesn’t talk about that in particular in this segment. However, I think his message is very clear – work on yourself first.

He also has another profound insight that he repeats over and over again. He says that in order for things to change you have to change. I think this is similar to what Gandhi said when he said be the change you want to see in the world.

So my friends focus on your being focus on you’re becoming. Be the change don’t expect things to change for you.

I really enjoy listening to Jim Rohn.

I want to be happy

Ask someone what they want and often times you’ll get the answer I just want to be happy.

What does that mean? In our pursuit of happiness we often don’t ask ourselves what does that mean?

So we go to school and get good grades and we feel fulfilled. We then keep going and go to college competing to get into the best college that we can get into. And when we arrive we feel good.

We again study and study and hope to get good grades. We interview to get the job we have been dreaming about.

When I get that job I will be happy.

You get the job. When I get the raise I will be happy. On and on.

Happiness is the road. It is not the destination.

Focus is key. You are who you focus on.

Focus is the key to long term success.

Water dripping off a rocky cliff can dig a hole in the rocks below.

Holding a magnifying glass still as the light from the sun collects on one point can create fire.

A person working towards a clear, detailed goal not distracted by the many peripherals of living can attain that goal. The clearer and more detailed the goal and the more focused everyday the person is, the more focused everything is and will be.

Focus. Your mind. Your time. Your emotions. Your reactions. Your attention. Your energy. Your choices. Your thinking. Your down time. Your vision. Your anger. Your joy. Your life.

You are who you focus on

Everything is perfect

Today I came across the saying Done is better than perfect. It got me thinking what does perfect really mean? So I looked it up on the Internet. Doesn’t seem to mean what we think it means like something that is without flaw. It seems to mean that it is done or complete

In our English language we have a grammar term present perfect. I have done, I have eaten, I have studied. The present perfect brings the past into the present and the past is complete and done. So the past is perfect.

I could go on and on about this but I think you understand what I’m saying. Perfect doesn’t mean without flaw it just means that it is the way it should be. The work is complete. The work is perfect. It reminds me of the movie Jerry Maguire. In one scene there are people using sign language and they sign you complete me. Other people seem to say you’re perfect for me. The reality is they are saying the same thing.

So now this little essay is complete. It is perfect for the way it is written. Perfection is not a comparison with other things, it is only compared to itself. It is perfect. We are complete.

Call me James

I often have heard that the actors have decided not to play a character for much longer. So why do actors feel like they need to stop playing a character?

My understanding is that they do not want to be stereotyped as that actor and they want to expand the repertoire and how they are perceived.

Why then do we like they’re human beings feel like we need to act same way at the same personality through our lives? Why can we also say I no longer wants to be stereotyped as this type of actor?

As Shakespeare said something like the world is out stage and we are merely players.

Expand your range. Why do you act the same way. Why do you not decide to expand who you are just as you do with what you do and what you know?

Is it really how people will respond to us that makes us fearful? Or to be perceived as being fake or inconsistent?

Live fully. Expand your range.

Only way out is forward

I remember seeing this quote somewhere. It was anonymous.

It is so powerful though. When wondering what to do, just keep moving forward. You really cannot go backwards.

This does not mean you cannot go back to an old job, old town, old lover, old ideas. It means venture forth and continue to make choices intentionally and do not dwell on the past like you can undo it.

You cannot shape the past. You cannot shape the future. You can shape the present.

The only way out is forward.

Passion is in our Action

Sometimes we view passive people as being the antithesis of active people.

If passive is the opposite of active, is passion the opposite of action.

In reality, they are complementary and not opposites.  It is through our actions that we truly uncover our passions. Passion cannot truly be found by making lists or filling out questionnaires.

Get out there and discover through actions. Explore by doing. You might just surprise yourself.
